The Business Objective... Dun Dun Duhhhhhhh

Fundamental Entity (FE): Michigan Steps Up campaign
So if I understand FE correctly (one would hope by this point!), then Michigan Steps Up services under their FE would be their walking challenges, partnerships with local sports teams and their Health Risk Assessment quiz.

Core Competence: This one is still tricky for me because I’m not sure this campaign has a skill they’ve really honed in on and that is resident throughout the entire campaign. I’ll say, skill at motivating individual health behavior change or skill at information dissemination (regarding how to improve health). Thoughts?

Goal: To improve the quality of life of Michiganders by improving their health.

Time Frame: Not sure just yet. Waiting to hear from Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH).

  1. I really love Michigan Steps Up, but I doubt that they have a skill at information dissemination since I have never heard of this initiative although I'm sort of a health freak myself. I believe that they should have the resources to spread the awareness around due to them being associated with Surgeon General and government, but they are not taking advantage of their resources at this point. Please let me know if I'm wrong.

You may also conduct a small survey among Michiganders that you know, see what percentage of people actually know about them.

I think their core competence is providing reliable and trusted information. People would believe something if Surgeon General is recommending it. What do you think?

  2. I guess I'm not really sure. To argue your point, I'd claim that 1) we'll probably find that non profits are not as good at their core competence as the corporate sector and 2) this campaign isn't disseminating any new information.

While I completely agree it hasn't been "successful" in information dissemination, remember that you nor I are its target audience. And while people may trust information from the Surgeon General, messages such as, "Smoking kills," and, "Eat fruit rather than potato chips" isn't stuff anybody doesn't know already.

I suppose their core competence might be motivation. The core of their campaign is to show people how easy it is to be active or choose a healthier food item.

  3. I don't know... this core competence thing is really hard to figure out. I think you may be right about the core competence being skill at motivating people. But is this too narrow? Do all the benefits this organization provides lead to motivation?
